Whether they are feeder visitors or not, birds need water. Offering a dependable source of water is probably the simplest and most important step you can take to greatly increase the variety of birds in your yard.
It can also significantly increase your enjoyment of your birds by allowing you to watch their often comical antics as they drink, bathe and preen.
Every other day you should empty the bath, scrub it with a brush and rinse it well. Refill with fresh water. If the algae builds up quickly, you can use white vinegar to clean the bird bath. Be sure to rinse well and place fresh water in the bath. We recommend placing a bird bath in the shade to slow evaporation and algae growth.
We offer a few options to help you keep your bird bath clean and safe for the birds. A battery-operated Water Wiggler creates ripples on the surface of the water to make your bird bath more inviting for the birds while also deterring mosquitos from laying eggs (they prefer stagnant water). Our Drip-or-Mist attaches to a hose and can slowly drip into a bath that creates ripples in the water, or it can create a fine mist for small birds like hummingbirds to enjoy. An Antimicrobial Copper Disk placed at the bottom of a bird bath will greatly reduce bacteria and algae growth. These products will greatly help keep your bird bath clean longer, but regular cleanings are still necessary.
During freezing weather, birds will flock to a reliable, open source of water. We offer a separate De-icer that can be added to an existing bird bath, or heated bird bath dishes. Both require an outdoor outlet for power. Concrete, glass, and ceramic bird baths should be put away during winter, as these materials are likely to crack or break during freezes and thaws.
